A mysterious and romantic expression of “The Stellar Odyssey” – the 2022 theme of the Maison – the superb Rendez-Vous Dazzling Shooting Star introduces, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s first complication capable of expressing a phenomenon as fascinating as it is unpredictable: shooting stars. Equipped with the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 734, this watch literally comes to life on the wrist of its owner who, simply by moving, activates the complication. On the blue aventurine dial, the shooting star appears randomly, as if by magic, four to six times per hour, trailing a vision of beauty in its wake. The secret of this complication is hidden in the center of the spangled dial surrounded by diamonds. Here, three superimposed discs make the shooting star appear and disappear. The spectacle is so beautiful, the wearer can even invoke the shooting star at whim by turning the crown several times.

CAPTURING THE UNPREDICTABLE

In 2022, the Rendez-Vous Dazzling Star & Rendez-Vous Star Métiers Rares® recreate the enchanting celestial phenomenon of a shooting star on the wrist, crossing the night sky, thanks to an entirely new mechanism conceived and developed within the Manufacture. Activated by the movement of the wrist, the shooting star appears on the dial at random moments. Its unpredictability making it even more special.

To enjoy the enchanting display more often, the star may also be summoned on demand by turning the winding crown several times.

UNPREDICTABLE AND MYSTERIOUS

Although the movements of the planets and stars conform to regular and measurable patterns, there is one notable exception: shooting stars. Surely the most romantic and intriguing of all celestial phenomena, they are not in fact stars but meteors – pieces of rocky debris from the tail of a comet, which burn brightly as they enter Earth’s atmosphere.

Occurring at random, they are visible only under the right conditions, with clear skies, no moonlight and far away from the ambient light of urban locations. At certain times of year, Earth passes through a comet’s tail, creating a meteor shower that can produce 100 or more shooting stars in an hour.

Creating a mechanism that expresses an unpredictable phenomenon is a fascinating challenge for watchmaking as it appears to defy the laws of horology – a world where everything is expressed through precisely calibrated, mathematical rhythms. The calibre 734 simply just does it.

NEW IN-HOUSE MECHANISM

Drawing on almost 190 years of expertise accumulated within the Manufacture, the engineers and watchmakers of Jaeger-LeCoultre have developed the new in-house automatic calibre 734, incorporating the new shooting star mechanism. In doing so, they have succeeded in an unprecedented feat of capturing a random cosmic phenomenon in a watchmaking complication.
