Diving in blue waters. On the Reverso Tribute Enamel watch reproducing the Doge’s Palace, one of Claude Monet’s most well-known paintings, shades of blue in Grand Feu enamel evoke Venice at dawn. The front of the watch features a guilloché dial in an intricate lozenge pattern. To achieve this translucent luminosity, 4,905 guilloché lines were then enamelled in blue Grand Feu. The enamellers at our Atelier des Métiers Rares™ took nearly 70 hours to complete the miniature reproduction of the impressionist master’s original work on the reverse. The blues and golds of the sky and sea seem to reflect each other in perfect colour harmony.

70 HOURS OF MINITATURE PAINTING ENAMELLING

The first of many challenges in decorating the Reverso case-back was to reproduce Claude Monet’s original work onto a surface of 2 cm2. The enameller also had to create an illusion of the impasto and recreate the dreamlike quality of the originals, with their fleeting effects of light and atmosphere.

17 HOURS FOR THE GUILLOCHÉ ENAMELLED DIAL

On the dial, the lozenge guilloché pattern creates constantly changing effects of light and shade as it is turned at different angles, echoing Monet’s fascination with the effect of light on water at different times of day. Amplified by translucent blue grand feu enamel, the geometric requires a total of 4,905 passages of hand-operated lathe.

ART STORY

AN HOMAGE TO CLAUDE MONET’S VENICE

Painted late in his career, Monet’s ‘Venice’ Series paintings exquisitely render the architecture and exceptional light of Venice that immediately captivated the artist when he and his wife arrived in La Serenissima in autumn 1908. It was a prolific period where Monet painted 37 images, in 10 weeks.

THE DOGE’S PALACE, VENICE

Painted from a gondola in the middle of Grand Canal at 8.00am, this view of the Doge’s Palace beautifully evokes the effect of morning light on the water. “The palace…was just an excuse for painting the atmosphere,” Monet wrote to a friend.

HERITAGE

THE BIRTH OF AN ICON

In 1931, Jaeger-LeCoultre launched a timepiece that was destined to become a classic of 20th-century design: the Reverso. As an object that so deftly synthesised form and function, it has become one of the most recognisable watches of all time, looking as fresh and modern today as when it first appeared.

While its blank metal flip side had begun as a purely functional solution to avoid damage to the dial, it was an ideal surface for personalisation with monograms, emblems or personal messages using lacquer, engraving, enamel or gemstones.

COLLECTION

Being the perfect canvas for artistic expression, personalisation has been at the core of Reverso watch since its creation. With 180 skills under one roof, the Atelier de Metiers Rares of Jaeger-LeCoultre is the perfect place to bring personalisation to life.
