What is a minute repeater watch?
The minute repeater watch is a masterpiece of precision, allowing the wearer to hear the time on demand at the touch of a button. This feature is particularly useful in the dark or when the dial is difficult to read.
How a minute repeater watch works
The minute repeater mechanism is one of the most sophisticated in watchmaking. It is based on a set of hammers that produce distinct sounds: a low tone for the hours, a high-low combination for the quarters and a high tone for the minutes.
When activated, the repeater watch makes a specific sound. For example, at 02:49, it will produce two low tones for the hours, three high-low sequences to represent the three quarters (45 minutes), and finally four high tones for the remaining minutes.
This mechanism is made possible by an ingenious combination of miniaturised components such as rakes, snail cams and other cams, which ensure the precision of the sound strokes. This craftsmanship has its roots in the first chiming timepieces, which first appeared at the end of the 17th century, which made it possible to tell the time in the dark.
